Hello, dear friends! Wow, am I looking forward to this new year!

I will be finished with my Digital Design program through The Art Institute of Pittsburgh's online division at the end of January, and I'm ready to begin putting my new-found skills to good use.

One class had us create a photo montage by choosing a character from a list given to us at the beginning of class. Each character came with a small explanation, and then we were to create a character on how we envisioned him or her. I chose "Garden Glitter Grace", and here she is, dancing across a field (quite frankly, it looks like a field that grew down the road from our house this past summer!).

Grace sports a grapes and mushroom cap hat, a radicchio leaf for her bodice, a beet for her belt, a field for her skirt adorned with onions, squash, cabbage, tomatoes, and a small field mouse. Her posture was manipulated using Photoshop, and I was able to change the color of her tights and ballet slippers with a few strokes of a brush.

My current class is called: Portfolio. We're gathering key pieces we created while attending classes to compile into an online portfolio. Grace will be a part of it, and I'm excited to put it all together. I hope to add my work to my website in the coming weeks, too.

A Moving Message

I am incredibly touched by the story of Mattie Stepanek's life. I've never read his books before, and the only reason I am aware of his life is because of Oprah, who has had him on her show.

I just finished watching Oprah interviewing Mattie's mom. Hearing again about his life, the lives he touched, and the moments before his death brought me to tears. I am amazed at how powerful this sweet little boy was.

Mary Ellen's Scrap Basket: McCall's Quick Quilts Oct/Nov 2011

My mom is the namesake for this quilt. The original quilt I made, after designing this very simple quilt, was made using fabrics by Moda. It was bright and cheerful, and the design reminded me of a basket weave. Besides, my mom loves to garden, and I thought of her clipping roses from her rose bushes and placing them in a basket to take inside and stick in a pretty vase!

The great thing about this quilt design is that no matter what fabrics you use, the design will look different each and every time! In this rendition, I used a lot of visually textured prints to lend a great amount of interest!

Can't recall if I shared this before, but I had the pleasure of writing, editing, and InDesign layout of Amy Butler's Sunshine Quilt pattern (Amy designed the quilt).

Well, in the pattern, my e-mail address is noted, should anyone making the quilt have any questions. In answering a few questions from fans of Amy's design, I was presented with a lovely gift recently, as a thank-you from Amy Butler Design.

I live with blinders on, and was not aware that Amy had a line of paper products, so I was completely thrilled to receive this generous gift of stationery, a list pad, a journal, a small, purse size photo album, and a carry-all project tote.

Thank you, Amy & Co. for the wonderful surprise! I love to write, and am treasuring my new gifts!

Hobson: Our Little Lemon & White Springer

His name is Hobson.

He's spunky, sweet, and learning lots from his big sister, Maisy.

Day 5 of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Vol. 3 Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Good day, fellow quilters! And such a wonderful day it is!

Quiltmaker is wrapping up the blog tour today, and I'm giving away one last issue of 100 Blocks, Volume 3. Leave a comment in this thread and go to my website to sign up for my NuzLetter to enter to win.

Today, I'm covering a few ways to place my applique block into a quilt. Of course, there are a myriad of ways to make this block look great. Here are some of my ideas . . .

With this first design, I wanted to keep the background light and airy, yet add drama by adding bits of black. This block resides in the archived files of my Electric Quilt software, EQ7, and is called: 8-Grid Chain Variation.You will see that I chose a simple block design that is made up of small squares. I chose this block specifically because I wanted to maintain visual balance with the applique. If I were to use a block with larger swatches of fabric, the applique blocks would get lost in the shuffle.

I also wanted to give you a few more options of color for this design. There was a recent showing of red and white quilts in New York City, so I thought I would show you how a quilt would look using mostly red and white.

And because most quilters like to start early on their Christmas gifts, I wanted to see what it would look like if I added some green.

I did one other quick design, where I wanted to bring in a different value of blue . . .

I used a dark gray for sashing, first border, and binding, and a deep aqua for the main border.

Here is another example of this same design.

So play around with different looks. Glean ideas from the colors you use in your block.

One more thing I'd like to point out is that I colored my applique block with similar toned fabrics from the standard fabric library that comes with all EQ software. I wanted to show you that the block looks great using anyone's fabrics.

Day 4 of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Vol. 3 Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Although I am not on the blog roster for today, I thought I would round out the week by giving away another Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 3 issue today and tomorrow, so please check back tomorrow, as well!

I received such nice messages from everyone yesterday, on how well they liked the block. Thank you very much! One thing I really enjoy is designing new quilt patterns, new blocks, and especially, new applique blocks.

My block called: Hearts Bejeweled, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 2

When I first tried applique, I wasn't that great at it. In fact, I was pretty lousy. But there was something about the process of applique, that I had to keep trying until I got it. It's rather cathartic! I'm still not where I would like to be, but for a self-taught girl, I'm pleased with what I can do. It takes time and patience, and if you're a first timer, please be easy on yourself. Pat yourself on the back for trying! And remember: we've all been there, feeling the same feelings of wanting to get it right.

When you get a moment, please look at my blog post from yesterday and click on the image of my block. Notice that my polka-dot circles are not perfect. The thing is, I'm okay with the little imperfections. However, I do strive to continually challenge myself, and that is probably a strong reason why I enjoy applique so much. There always seems like room to grow. :)

So my block called Bertrand's Arrows really isn't as hard as it looks.

DAY 5: Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour

Greetings, friends! This has been such a fulfilling journey, meeting new quilters during Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour, this week. I wish you all many fabulous hours of planning and designing! If any of you have questions, I'll gladly answer them for you, if I can. So please feel free to ask. If I cannot answer, I can certainly start by pointing you in a direction for more information. You can either ask in one of my posted blogs, or feel free to e-mail me.

With a new quilt to be made with a December 1st deadline, I must run. I will be writing about it in a future blog. For those of you who purchase magazines and are curious about the process, planning for issues typically begins 6 to 9 months before a magazine is scheduled to be published.

DAY 4: Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour

I hope you all are enjoying your week of blogs and give-aways, compliments of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks! I know I am, and I look forward to picking winners of my giveaways this weekend! It's always fun to participate in programs such as this, and I especially appreciate all of you and your kind words! When you work in a one-girl-studio, it helps to know that people like what you're doing and it gives us, as designers, such great energy to plan new designs and projects for you to enjoy. So I thank you, from the bottom of my heart! :) For without your feedback and interest, it simply would not be as satisfying to continue to come up with new patterns and designs.

With today's blog, I plan to share some ideas you may like to use to set my block into a quilt. I have a few basic tips that are easy and fun, and will enhance a simple quilt top design.

Because the block should be the focus, you'll want to stay away from large, oversize prints. I would suggest that you find a tone-on-tone, or two-color mini or medium-sized print to sash your blocks with. I will use my block and it's fabrics as an example, and we will create a few different, easy designs with a touch of panache!

My first example balances the dominance of the deep rose appliqued hearts with a rosy red print border from Verna Mosquera's Savon Bouquet for FreeSpirit. Sash your blocks with the Lecien blue-on-brown dot I used as the small center square and mini circles. Then bind the piece with the same blue-on-brown dot.

My second example shows a softer setting, where I use a light blue medallion print for the main border. The blocks are sashed and the piece is bound using the same fabric as the appliqued hearts.

My 3rd and 4th examples will give you an idea of taking the same sashing and border prints and changing up the binding. In these examples, I again used the same tone-on-tone deep rose print I used for the hearts to sash the blocks. Next, I pulled in a pretty, French-inspired floral from the Savon Bouquet line that has touches of blue to marry back to the blue dot background fabric of the appliqued blocks. Where these pieces differ is with the binding. See how you can use the blue-on-brown dot for the binding (#3), or pull the tone-on-tone deep rose print out to the border for #4. Both are attractive and can give you a different "feel", depending on where you will be using the piece. For example, if you wish to use it as a wall hanging, you may consider using version #3. You could also use this version in a room where there is a lot of dark wood. The #4 version is very pretty and feminine and could be used on the wall or as a dresser scarf in a girl's bedroom. Or, add it to the center of a rustic pine table.

With a few simple changes, you can give your quilt designs a different personality. Give thought to the myriad of possibilities you can dream up and interview fabrics into your designs that you never would have imagined. A few questions you can ask yourself, as you pull your fabrics for this design are:

1) Does the fabric work better as a frame to the blocks or as a border?
2) What "feeling" do I want to show with my design? Do I want it to blend into an eclectic environment, or something more traditional? More eclectic, use a few different fabrics, if more traditional, stick to the same fabrics with smaller borders and use a different print for larger borders.
3) What decor do I wish to place this design in? Consider the style and color tones of fabrics in order to blend well with your decor. Before purchasing fabrics, ask your local shop for sample pieces to bring home with you if you are not sure they will work.

In addition to the table runner/wall hanging design shown here, I'd like to share an idea with you on how to place the blocks into a quilt design. The quilt size is approximately 67 1/2" x 67 1/2". I will be posting a pattern to make both the quilt and the runner designs next week!

The topic for today is how I go through my process of designing . . .

I have several ways I use to glean inspiration for new designs. I've always been attentive to my surroundings, so I am constatly looking at that which is around me: the shape of a vase,

I also like to pay close attention to the details of fashion, with a strong emphasis on colors that are being worn. I especially like to see what is coming out for the next few seasons, as this gives great hints on what to incorporate into the design process.

I pay attention to television programs I watch with my husband as I'm sketching, and I also like to refer to nature for color and design ideas. Visiting popular boutique shopping areas will give you ideas for color and design, as well. And finally, I enjoy paging through books and magazines related to the design industry. That being said, I try not to look at current quilt magazines, as I like to try to come up with unique designs and not copy what everyone else is doing. I have a few other secrets up my sleeve that I like to refer to, but what I've shared here is what I mostly rely upon.

For tomorrow's topic, I will be sharing some ideas you may like to use, to set my block into a quilt. I have a few basic tips that are easy and fun, and they will show off your blocks beautifully!

When meeting new people and talking about what we do for a living, it's not a simple answer on my part. I am often amazed at how unique my job is, when I sit and think about it. It's not something you think about going to school for when you're young. It seems to be a career you fall into, rather than aspire to. I feel so fortunate to work in an industry that is so warm and friendly, and one that acknowledges talent on many different levels.

Today, I thought I would talk about what I do in the quilting industry. I work on a few different levels. My first responsibility is to my freelance work. I design quilts using the latest fabric lines, manufactured by leading fabric companies. Companies I've worked with are Quilting Treasures (see free quilt patterns I designed on their website!), Hoffman California Fabrics, RJR Fabrics, Windham Fabrics, Michael Miller, FreeSpirit, Moda, Lecien, Henry Glass, Timeless Treasures, Marcus Fabrics, and Red Rooster. For the first time, I will be using a line of fabrics by Westminster/Rowan for an upcoming quilt, so I am always open to working with new companies. I'm always looking for fabrics that are new and, even if they are reproductions, ones that stand out in design.

My freelance work has consisted of designing and making quilts for fabric company's booths for the International Quilt Markets, designing and making quilts for magazines, and writing and editing quilt patterns. The second level of work I do is for my business, SuzGuz Designs. I have a growing line of patterns that has been on hold over the past year, due to the amount of freelance work I've been doing. However, I just came out with two new, easy quilt patterns using pre-cut fabrics, and they are available on my website beginning this week. The first is called: "Across the Street", made using one layer cake and one jelly roll. The second is called: "Gables and Eaves", and is also made using one layer cake and one jelly roll. Gables and Eaves has a bonus pattern, where you can make a baby quilt from the scraps to give as a gift or donate to your local Department of Social Services. They are always in desperate need of quilts for the children they help.

One more project that has been on hold is writing my NuzLetter, which is likened to a mini-magazine. I write about my business, interview people in our industry, write about interior design (something I used to do for a living and thoroughly enjoyed!), share recipes and entertaining ideas, find interesting new items for gift-giving, and also have guest writers share their talents. Our next Nuz is in the planning stages, and we hope to start it up again, soon. You can sign up to receive a link to The Nuz by going to my website. Finally, I am taking classes that are helping me achieve a goal I've set for myself in bringing my business to a new and different level; still staying in the quilting industry. I also have an idea I'm working on for a new ruler, of sorts, that I am very excited about. It is one that will work well with a variety of different fabrics, and I hope to have more information on it, soon!

At the time I was contacted to submit a block, I was filling an order for my Patchwork Rendezvous quilt pattern (available for purchase through my website). The fabrics I used to make the pattern are from Verna Mosquera's line of fabrics called Savon Bouquet for FreeSpirit.

Patchwork Rendezvous Quilt Pattern

Because this pattern from our growing line has been such a great seller, AND because I love, love, love the fabrics, I decided I would pull out my scraps from this quilt to start working on an idea for my block.

To construct the block, I introduced a myriad of fabrics from my stash. The brown polka dot fabric used in the center square and the small circles was left over from my quilt called Nonpariel, shown in McCall's Quilting, May/June 2009. The 4 yellow squares and the fabric used for the hearts is from Verna's Savon Bouquet. The spear shapes' fabric and the pretty robin's egg blue polka dot background are from a fat quarter bundle I purchased last year at the International Quilt Market (forgive me, as we just moved, and I can't recall the fabric line . . . if interested, please e-mail me!). I believe the green I used for the stems is one of the Kona Cotton solids. I can check on this one, as well, if anyone is interested.

The applique hearts design I came up with was actually inspired by a fleur de lis image I found in a magazine. I wanted to use fabrics that were fun and playful, yet connected back to the French fleur de lis.

In honor of the release of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 2 magazine, I will be giving away something every day this week. Buying My Bottle of Pet Rocks

In my Concept Development class that I'm taking now, we're talking about point-of-purchase (POP) displays. It is interesting to note how effective they can be. Whether you're at the fabric store, in line to check out with your groceries, or stopping by a drug store, the cash registers are always laden with little extras to entice us. And it works! One nationally known retailer has taken it to an entirely new level, where they corral you down an aisle full of POP items. Brilliant on their part; where you don't have a choice but to look all around you while you wait in line for your turn to check-out. Pretty smelling candles, do-dads for the kitchen, decorative frames, books, movies, and even funky socks. Most of the items are about $10 or less. However, the enticing isn't over yet. When you're called to be checked out, as you approach the register, you'll see other POP displays, calling out to your hunger pangs or luring you in, visually.

I was trying to remember what I bought last, while at the cash register. I think it was my bottle of Mary Ellen's Best Press. Lavender Fields. If you haven't tried ME's line of pressing spray, you really ought to try a bottle. My friend, Kari Ramsay, turned me onto it a few years ago, while attending my second International Quilt Market. It truly is a marvelous product to buy on impulse!

Remember the pet rock? One of the one-hit-wonders of the retail world! Do you have any "pet rock" ideas? All it takes is one small, quirky idea that you may have, and then act upon it.

I'm rather classic, when it comes to dressing, but I do like asymmetrical lines, zippers where they peak someone's attention, embellishments that should be framed and shown in an art gallery . . . I love clothing and accessories that are timeless, yet give you the excuse to smile at how clever they are.

Reflections of a Quilt Pattern Designer

Often times, I come in here and have so much I want to talk about but can't. It can be very daunting, keeping things under wraps! I'm so thankful for all of the work that has come my way. Recently, I've taken on extra freelance work and am taking a class for a course I'm taking through The Art Institute of Pittsburgh's online division. It is a program that will take me into late next summer, 2011 that I'm counting on to expand what I already do.

One thing I can mention is that I'll have a quilt in the upcoming November/December 2010 issue of McCall's Quilting. It is a quilt I called: Highland's March. I had the pattern for sale on my site, but decided to pull it with the upcoming issue to hit newsstands within the next month. I'm so glad to be able to offer free patterns through the magazines that keep me busy! The quilt has a subtle 3-D effect to it with one of the borders and when I was finished making it, a few years ago, it reminded me of a quilt that would have traveled across the states heading west in a covered wagon. The fabrics used are from Quilting Treasures and are reproduction. I hope you'll like it!

So, what do I do on a daily basis? It changes daily, so I'll touch on today's work, which consists of some editing, prepping binding for two new upcoming quilt patterns (look for them in October!), responding to e-mails, working on future designs, and checking in with my online class. I also have patterns to prep and mail for shops, a distributor, and a new customer. What I'm working on today may not be seen for up to 8 months. And although it is still very exciting to reveal projects coming out, I typically have my head in projects that are starting a new 8 month process. It is a crazy business, yet so satisfying.

What I enjoy most about what I do is the variety. I like that I'm able to work with the latest in fabric colors and designs, I'm able to keep my basic math skills up when writing patterns, and I'm able to see my designs come to life from a basic sketch.

I was browsing through Fabric.com's website and saw where they have 19 different fabrics from the Savon Bouquet line on sale for $3.99/yard . . .

I used Savon Bouquet for my quilt sample on the cover of my pattern: Patchwork Rendezvous.

This pattern still sells strongly and I thought I'd mention the great pricing for the fabric.

If you are interested in purchasing the pattern to make the quilt using this fabric, keep in mind that I used 25 different fat quarters for the finished quilt.

A First: Quilting Together Quilting Retreat

I received an invitation from my friend, Carolyn Beam, Creative Editor for Quiltmaker Magazine, to attend a new quilting retreat in Chicago, this year. It is called: Quilting Together in Chicago, and will be held September 29th - October 2, 2010. I will not be able to attend, but hope you can!

The Quilting Together website says that it "is the first event to bring together editors from you favorite quilting magazines with industry experts and innovators to provide avid quilters with a quilting retreat like no other."

In addition to Carolyn, Sherri Bain Driver, a former colleague, and Angie Hodapp, Editor-in-Chief of Quilters Newsletter, will also be holding a class. Sherri is Associate Editor of McCall's Quilting, McCall's Quick Quilts, and the McCall's Special Issues magazines.

Other instructors who will be teaching are Marianne Fons, co-founder of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting magazine, Jo Morton, quilt artist, fabric designer, teacher, author, and lecturer, Dawn Cavanaugh, award winning custom freehand quilter, Jodie Davis, "quilting enabler" and host of Quilt Out Loud & Quilt It!, and Nancy Mahoney, author, teacher, and fabric designer.

Spring Market Quilts: Free Patterns on QT's Website

Here are two quilts I made for Quilting Treasures, that hung during Spring Market 2010 . . . Patterns for these quilts will be on Quilting Treasures' website, soon!

My camera was not on the best setting, resulting in a blurry photo . . . This is Jim Shore's new line, called: Royal Family. Quilted by Linda Barrett of Threads and Traditions. Linda did a beautiful all-over swirled pattern in a periwinkle thread.

This photo was taken before the quilt was sent to Market. Playing card images are hand appliqued onto the pieced blue/cream check background. Bonus throw pillow pattern included!

Here is the second quilt: Made using Sweet Baby, by Susan Branch. Again, not such a great photo, but I wanted to share the image with you.

The chicks were hand appliqued, then eye and legs/feet applied using black pearl cotton embroidery floss. Linda custom quilted this one. Pretty scalloped edge, swirled motif in white spaces, blocks are stitch-in-the-ditch, chicks are outlined, and fanned motifs in chick block corners, resembling a chick's footprint.

New Discovery: Blue Rose Pottery

My husband, Erv, has been working in Mexico and living in El Paso, Texas, for the past 3 weeks. It's tough to be away from your spouse for that long, especially if he's your best friend and biggest fan. We enjoy spending time together, so there is a big void for both of us.

On Friday evening, I drove up to Charlotte to pick Erv up from the airport. On my way, I saw a couple of new billboards advertising a pottery store off Exit 85 of I-77 in South Carolina. The name of the store is Blue Rose Pottery. I thought it would be a fun shop to stop by when he flew out, a few days later, so that's what we did.

I had the pleasure of meeting darling fabric designer, Laura Gunn, who is an artist, by trade. We met her on our ride down to the Minneapolis Convention Center from our hotel.

She has a new line of fabric through Michael Miller, called: Poppy Collection. I love it because it's fresh and unique. The color tones are very pretty, too! I'm going to play around with the swatches to see what I can come up with. I think it will make into a fantastic quilt pattern.

Shasta Daisy . . . Our newest quilt pattern!

This is SuzGuz Designs' newest pattern, Shasta Daisy, using RJR's Shasta line by Lori Mason. Check out the entire line. I love the other color ways. The color way shown was chosen by the RJR Marketing staff.

Each daisy is machine appliqued and has two different sized petals. The petals are kept raw-edged with two layers of fabric, then snipped along the outside seam allowance to give a rag-quilt effect. Same technique is done with the daisy centers.

Linda Barrett, of Threads and Traditions, beautifully custom quilted each strip with a different motif. It is lovely! Shop owners, it will be shown in the United Notions booth during Spring International Quilt Market in Minneapolis, for a closer look. You can also find our Fleur Vivant...in yellow, in UN's booth, too.

Quilters can purchase the quilt pattern on our website beginning today.

A Sentiment to my PC . . . Goodbye, dear friend . . .

I've been using my PC for almost 7 years, now. She had a great life, storing photos of my family, the dolls I used to create, random crafts I'd make, and the beginnings of my quilt designing career.

Like a comfortable pair of slippers that have seen their last day, I must replace her with a new model. The new kid on the block will have lots more storage to hold my Electric Quilt designs, fabric swatches to play with, and a brand new keyboard that doesn't show the shiny spots on the keys, from years of clicking away.

A Lovely Young Lady

My quilter, Linda Barrett, of Threads and Traditions, is originally from England. However, Linda's father is from Estonia. Other than what Linda has shared with me, I knew nothing about this charming little country; the smallest of the Baltic countries that sits on the Baltic Sea.

You know how you start researching one thing, then it leads you to another? Well, through Lonely Planet, I stumbled upon a young lady's blog who wrote about a trip she took to Tallin, Estonia (town square pictured, above). I was drawn in by her experiences of travel, not only to Tallin, but to other spots across Europe. Go to her blog to learn interesting facts and tidbits about unique travel opportunities. She also just started a travel planning/consulting business that I hope to one day take advantage of. I bookmarked her site for the future. Near future, I hope!

The May/June 2010, McCall's Quilting Magazine's cover is fantastic! It shows "Yesterday & Today: Birds & Blooms", a quilted wall hanging, made by Pat Sloan (pretty applique on black background), and "Stash Dash", a quilt made by Julia LaBauve and Tammy Silvers. Homemade Chocolate Eggs (Peanutbutter, too!)

A few years ago, I signed up to receive a few different About.com e-mail newsletters. Jen Hubley is the About.com:Today author and in today's e-mail, she offers two links for recipes on making chocolate eggs.

The recipes are compliments of Elizabeth LaBau of the About.com Candy Guide. Elizabeth is a pastry chef and confectioner and you can read all about her, here. And if you enjoy making sweet confections, check out her candy blog, where you can find a few other chocolate egg recipes.

Double Chocolate Easter Eggs
These beautiful flowered Easter eggs have a chocolate-walnut filling and a deep, dark chocolate coating. The marshmallow flowers are optional but add a beautiful finishing touch.
Prep Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
1 package (5.25 oz) chocolate pudding mix, not instant
1/2 cup milk
1 lb powdered sugar, sifted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup chopped walnuts
5 ounces unsweetened chocolate (can substitute bittersweet)
1 tbsp shortening
34 miniature marshmallows (optional; see note below)
colored sugar or sprinkles (optional; see note below)
Preparation:

1. Place the butter in a medium saucepan and heat it over medium until the butter is melted. Pour in the pudding mix and stir until smooth and well-combined.

2. Slowly pour in the milk and continue to stir until mixture is smooth. Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring, until mixture is very thick and pulls from the sides of the pan.

3. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla. Stir in the walnuts and allow to cool for 5 minutes.

4. Form the mixture into about 20 egg shapes and place on foil-lined baking sheet. Place in the refrigerator to chill for 30 minutes.

5. While candy is setting, melt the unsweetened chocolate and shortening together in the microwave. Allow it to cool, but not set. If it begins to harden before candy is ready to be dipped, re-warm it in the microwave briefly.

6. Dip the eggs in the melted chocolate using two forks or dipping tools. Place them back on the baking sheet. If you are decorating with the optional marshmallow flowers (see below), place them on the eggs while the chocolate is still wet. Place the eggs back in the refrigerator to set completely.

To Make Decorative Marshmallow Flowers: Using a sharp knife, cut the mini marshmallows in thirds. Dip one cut end of each marshmallow segment in colored sugar. Arrange five segments in a flower shape on the wet chocolate eggs.

Chocolate-Peanut Butter Easter Eggs
Chocolate and peanut butter are a natural flavor combination that shines in this festive recipe for Chocolate-Peanut Butter Easter Eggs. If you want to increase the peanut flavor you can substitute more peanut butter for some or all of the cream cheese. If desired, you can use regular chocolate instead of the chocolate coating the recipe calls for. The coating is easier because it will remain hard at room temperature, while regular chocolate gets soft and sticky when warm. This recipe yields about 2 dozen eggs.
Prep Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

1.5-2 cups powdered sugar
3 ounces (about 1/2 cup) chocolate chips, melted
2 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp hot water
3 tbsp peanut butter
1/8 tsp salt
1 lb chocolate candy coating
1/4 cup peanut butter chips (to decorate, optional)
Preparation:

1. Place the melted chocolate chips, cream cheese, vanilla, hot water, peanut butter, salt, and 1 cup of powdered sugar in the bowl of a large electric mixer. Using the paddle attachment, mix the ingredients until the candy is well-mixed and homogenous.

2. Stop the mixer and add an additional 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. Mix the candy on low, stopping to scrape down the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl, until it is entirely mixed and smooth. Check the texture of the candy: you want it to be firm enough to easily be shaped into an egg, but not too dry and stiff. If necessary, add more powdered sugar to get the right texture.

3. Using a spoon, scoop up a small amount of candy and roll it between your hands until it is an oblong egg shape. Place it on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil and repeat with remaining candy until you have approximately two dozen eggs.

4. Put the eggs in the refrigerator to stay firm while you melt the chocolate candy coating. Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in one-minute increments until melted, stirring after every minute to prevent overheating.

5. Once the chocolate is melted, dip the eggs in the chocolate and replace them on the foil-covered sheet.

6. If you want to add decorative peanut butter stripes, place the peanut butter chips in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave until melted, stirring after every 30 seconds to prevent overheating. Pour the melted chips into a ziploc bag, and cut a tiny hole in the corner. Pipe stripes, polka dots, or other designs of your choice on the eggs.

7.Refrigerate for 30 minutes to set the chocolate and peanut butter chips. Chocolate-Peanut Butter Easter Eggs can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to a week. They are best served at room temperature.

Weekender Trip

Last month, Erv and I went to Florida to help celebrate my mom's surprise birthday weekend. It was great seeing my parents and brothers, sister, and their families. On our way home, we stayed a few days in St. Augustine.
The hotel we stayed in had such beautiful architectural accents and this incredible mirror opposite the elevators.

The detail was amazing . . .

After settling into our room, we went down to the lobby bar for a bite to eat, to tide us over until dinner. While sitting there, I noticed this pretty chandelier hanging from a cove ceiling, painted blue with gold accents.

The shrimp cocktail was delicious and sat on wonderfully flavored greens. Very refreshing!

Painted details are everywhere; the columns were stunning!

Down the street from the hotel, on the other side of the park, is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine and it's filled with beautifully painted images in varying hues of gold, red, green, and blue. In the gift shop you will find unique religious items and other interesting memorabilia.

Our last night there, we walked to Flagler College, where they allow you to enter the lobby and take photos. Here is a photo of the main entrance of the college during the day:

Flagler College is the former Ponce de Leon Hotel and is filled with incredible detail. The frogs are part of a fountain, just outside the lobby doors.

All my pictures here were taken with my iPhone, so the evening pictures are not as defined. However, I'd like to share a few photos of the college lobby, here.

Friday Sew Club

Good friendship and conversation is plentiful while they sew. Here is Mary, stitching her second block of Sue Garman's "Ladies of the Sea" applique quilt pattern . . .

. . . while "Fifi" (Gail) is in the kitchen, slicing up the most delectible quiche!

What a delightful group to spend some quality time with, sharing an art we all love: Quilting! I was so thrilled to find out from Roz that there are 4 ladies in the group that are making the Ladies of the Sea quilt (two of which could not attend, this past Friday). I belong to the online Yahoo Group and it is such a treat to make this quilt with new friends.

Above is Mary, Gail, Lynn, Roz, and Mary. Lynn Buske was our hostess and she is such a delightful, kind, and talented woman. Lynn is best known for her creative techniques and informative classes and teaches around the country. She has been quilting for 43 years.

I'm really enjoying my new friends and look forward to spending more time with them. They're fun to be with.

South Carolina Snow Surprise!

Last night, while enjoying a nice dinner at home, the snow kept falling. It started around 4 p.m. and didn't stop. I've been wishing and praying for snow . . . a very rare occurrence in South Carolina . . .

This morning, with blue skies and lots of sunshine, it began to melt . . .

And I really enjoyed the gift of seeing my beloved snow!

Last October, we gave you a sneak-peek at an upcoming pattern using RJR Fabrics new line called Harlequin. After making the quilt, it took a quick trip to Keepsake Quilting to be photographed for their catalog (photo courtesy of Keepsake Quilting):

Keepsake Quilting is now selling kits to make this quilt, which includes one of our newest patterns for 2010, called: Fleur Vivant. Fleur Vivant will come in the yellow/black colorway, as shown, and a red/black colorway, as well. Both patterns (only - no kits) will be available on our website, very soon! We have a few more patterns we will officially release at the same time. They will include two patterns we're featuring with Moda Fabrics, so please check back for more information.

Our Block-of-the-Month for 2009 came to an end in December. Due to the studio being closed for most of January, our final pattern instructions on how to finish the quilt top will be available to our BOM Club Members before the patterns are released this month!

I cannot believe it is already January 25. Really?! Wow . . .

We've been out of the studio for most of December and January, doing some freelance work, and are back with a bang! Lots and lots going on, so stay tuned. You should see more activity, here in the blog, with new designs coming out, as well.

A Lovely Day of Thanks

We had such a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with our neighbors, yesterday. The turkey came out perfectly!

Our menu consisted of herb roasted turkey, spiral-cut smoked ham, cranberry orange salad (sister-in-law Debra's recipe), my mom's recipes for broccoli waldorf salad and peas with mushrooms, onions, and bacon, my mother-in-law's recipe for sweet potato casserole, and my recipe for garlic and fresh basil smashed potatoes.

Husband, Erv, made me a piece of salmon, since I do not eat meat. It was awesome! He marinated it in olive oil and spices, then gilled it. Oh, was it good! Our neighbor, Todd, made a delicious cabbage dish from his Cajun background that I've never heard of, and it was the perfect addition. Since we've deemed him "King of the Roux", he made our turkey gravy. We also tried frozen rolls for the first time, by a local entrepreneur: Sister Schubert's Clover Leaf style dinner rolls, and they were as good as homemade. My mom makes rolls similar to these, that was my grandmother's recipe (I really should try to make them one day!).

The broccoli waldorf salad never made it out of the refrigerator. There always seems to be something that doesn't make it to the table, each year. It's a flavorful salad made with broccoli florets, diced apple, raisins, pecans, and a dressing made from canola oil, balsamic vinegar, and sugar. I usually give it a quick swirl of olive oil, too, for a bit of extra flavor.

Dessert consisted of my grandmother's recipe for homemade pumpkin pie (I made 2 on Wednesday night), and a pecan pie, and an apple pie. We topped it all off with French roast coffee and Frangelico.

Getting It All Ready!

Quilt designing is a process. I'll explain how I do it. We all have a different method, I'm sure. This is an image of a block from my current 2009 Block-of-the-Month Club:

I typically begin with a pad of graph paper. I used to use this same medium when I would plan out floor plans for my interior design clients. Graph paper is a wonderful tool to use because it's already broken down into equal spaces, which makes for easier figuring . . . Yes! You have to have somewhat of a knack for math.

I sketch out a myriad of designs: blocks, quilts, images, motifs. No particular system; just sketch whatever inspires me. Sketching is one of my most favorite things to do. I aspire to one day put what I envision on paper, onto fabric.

Next, I determine how much fabric I'll need. When figuring out the amount of fabric, you need to consider that there may be adjustments while writing the pattern. With experience, you instinctively know to get what you need and just a bit more to cover potential errors. I'm so pleased to say that the extra fabric from our "Box of Chocolates" pattern allowed me to put this give-away together.

We're getting the package ready! From the fabric I have left over from making my sample quilt, 6 of the 25 fat quarters will not be in the form of a fat quarter.

You'll actually be getting more than a fat quarter from the 6 . . .

For the two or three fabrics I didn't receive enough of, you will get comparable replacements in color tone, so you'll still achieve the same effect . . .

The Hospitable Pineapple

The pineapple is best know as a symbol of hospitality. In colonial times, when sailors returned home from a long journey, a pineapple brought from distant voyages was placed at the front of the house. This indicated that the house was welcoming visitors.

We happened upon artist Scott Penegar while perusing vendors' wares in a downtown Charleston outdoor market. He was beginning to pack up his beautiful, limited edition plaques when we approached his booth. I was so taken with his work, that I bought a small plaque similar to this one in rectangle form.

Each piece is a signed, limited edition plaque cast from an original sculpture by Scott in his art studio.

A Delightful Day in Charleston

We recently took a day trip to Charleston, SC.

It is a city seeped in history and amazing stories from the past.

I have such a love for architectural details and often find inspiration for my designs from photos I take.

I took several photos of doorways and loved the simple lines and knobs of these doors. This home is for sale and had a mossy slate walkway to the back courtyard.

This antique stairway was so charming, with greenery popping from the cracks and a checkerboard entry, once you passed through the massive iron gate.

The homes are so beautifully taken care of, painted in cheerful colors . . . some dating back to the 17oo's.

We found cobblestone streets . . .

. . . and streets made of brick.

It was truly a delightful day!

South Carolina, Here We Come!

My husband and I are moving to South Carolina . . . today! There are 4 men loading the semi with our possessions, as I write this. We'll be heading out on our road trip, with our veeeerrrry vocal kitty, Charlie Chaplin, and our two dogs, Maisy and Boomer. We've done it before. I'm hoping that they all travel well this time. There was one move we did where we had two sick pups, along with Chaz who meowed almost the entire 3-day trip. It was craziness. We anticipate this trip being much smoother.

I will be back, blogging on a more regular basis after we land!

Crazy, snowy weather . . . and Springtime in Colorado

Last week, the weather gurus were gearing up for a huge spring snow storm. A serious snow storm. Predictions of up to 24" on the front range (that's where we live). The mountains were predicted several feet.

The storm lasted from Friday morning through Saturday, early evening.

And after all was said and done and the rain began to shrink our snowy abundance, we ended up with about 18" of heavy, wet snow.

Within 3 days, the remnants of our storm were nowhere to be found. It is really quite amazing how being a mile high from sea level turns a winter wonderland into a sprouting, green terrain within a few days.

Adding binding to a quilt is one of my very favorite things to do. I received my sample quilt back from Russ and am slowly but surely adding the binding. That's my sample of Patchwork Rendezvous in the background.

Often times, the pattern is written and published before the quilts have been quilted.

This is the new June 2009 McCall's Quilting magazine cover. And this is the quilt I designed and made, called: Polka Dot Pinwheels. It is in this issue on page 78. I am so amazed at how wonderful their layouts are and when it's your quilt, you feel like a proud parent. When you check out the quilt, you may do a double-take, as the name was changed to: Nonpareil.

I'm talking with the fabric company - Lecien Corp. - about making this quilt into a kit, so stay tuned! And they requested the quilt for their booth at Spring Market in Pittsburgh, PA, so you can see it in person there.

This afternoon, I began cutting Turnovers out of Layer Cakes, and this is what I have left to cut (there is a whole row of Layer Cakes under what you see).

Take it from me: It is better to simply buy the Turnovers than to cut them out of larger pieces of fabric.

However, the fabric I wanted to use for my sample for Mary Ellen's Basket did not come with Turnovers, thus I'm doing the cutting (you can see the stack I've cut so far in the background, which consists of the rectangular pieces you see spread out on the cutting mat).

It's been a lot of fun seeing the different fabrics that are in this line and I look forward to seeing how they all come together.

In the last photo, you'll see a printout from my EQ6 program where I printed off the yardage. With the yardage estimate comes a tiny picture of each individual fabric you use in your design. I keep these close by when designing, especially if I'm dealing with a lot of different fabrics. I like to mark on this page, the number of cut sizes I will need of each fabric. I love being organized and this has helped immensely!

I have two new designs to talk about . . .

The first quilt pattern is called: In A Snap!

. . . and it is just that easy to make. Made with (2) Turnover packs and (1) Honey Bun plus border, backing, and binding fabric. You will love it! My sample will be made using American Jane's Snippets for Moda. Look for it under Moda's "Available In March" section.

The next quilt pattern is called: Mary Ellen's Basket

It is also an easy quilt to make and my mom (with whom it is named after) already gave it high marks. I knew she'd love it because the fabrics used are florals and colors she loves. Made with (3) Turnovers, (1) Jelly Roll plus enough fabric for 2 borders, backing, and binding fabric. My sample will be made using Lila Tueller's Soiree for Moda. Look for it under Moda's "Available In February" section. Special Note: Lila Tueller's Soiree line does not come with Turnovers. Instructions will be noted on the pattern if you choose to use this fabric.

These patterns should be available within the next 7 to 10 days. The quilts will be shown during Spring Market at the United Notions booth.

Coffee Mugs . . . How many do you have?

Erv and I are muggaholics. Yep. That's us! Whenever we're out at Starbucks, visiting somewhere out of town, stopping in at a local gift shop, at the airport, etc., etc., we look at coffee mugs. We have a multitude of mugs for almost every holiday. We can justify almost any mug purchase, too. We have so many Christmas mugs that we have to clear out our every-day mugs and pack them away during the holiday season. Next time you're in a store and you see a mug you like, buy it and enjoy it. It is one of our simple life's pleasures!

Braided Rag Rug Tutorial on Moda Bake Shop

Asian Fabric Magazine's Winter (End of March, 2009) Issue

I'm working with this Kona Bay panel and created a wall hanging for Asian Fabric Magazine, the magazine published for Kona Bay Fabrics. Along with the wall hanging will be a coordinating throw that will blend with the panel. I'm going to attempt to do some fabric origami on the wall hanging. It will be my first time doing origami of any kind. I thought it would be neat to incorporate the 3-D - look of the origami, adding visual texture to the piece.

I picked up the book, "Origami Rings & Wreaths, A Kaleidoscope of 28 Decorative Origami Creations", by Tomoko Fuse, to use as my teacher. I'll be using up to 3 of the designs created in the book. Tomoko says, "The simple and clear instructions are so easy to follow that even absolute beginners can make units in a few steps without confusion." That comment alone would be why I bought the book.

One day, I hope to take some time and use paper to create some of these unique pieces. There are some great sites on the web where you can buy packages of different origami papers. And WOW!, are they gorgeous.

I received a phone call from Mark Lipinski of Quilter's Home magazine on Friday, asking a few questions about a quilt I made specifically for QH. The name of the quilt is "Go Bananas!", and it will be in the June 2009 issue, along with some other colorful quilts. I used the fabric line called: Minny Muu, by Lecien (a Japanese fabric company). The fabrics are very playful and fun and I hope you'll enjoy the quilt, too! The quilt's center is a traditional, somewhat-difficult pattern but I made it up so that anyone can make it easily.

I just checked my photo album to see if I could give you a sneek-peek, but I had forgotten that, at the time, I was rushed to get the quilt in the mail and never took a picture of it. All I have is the EQ6 image and it simply doesn't show the fabrics as well as in person.

This afternoon I must work on the upcoming "Norman Rockwell's Christmas" collection quilt for Quilting Treasures. It's a very simple design and I'll let you know when it is available as a free pattern on QT's site (sometime after May). The quilt will be shown at Spring Market in Pittsburgh, as well, for those of you who are attending. I'm waiting for my "I Love Lucy" fabrics (also QT). That's the next one I'll be doing for Spring Market, as well. The new line is called: "Hollywood At Last". The thing I love about QT's fabrics is that they bring back such fond memories of the past!

Life does go on . . . but I can still cry a few tears in the mean time

I found out last night that my girlfriend's mom passed away last year. Her brother told me so . . . I recently connected with him through the internet. I lost touch with the family several years ago. I sent an invitation to Erv's and my wedding but it came back without a forwarding address. I remember being very sad knowing they would not be there, even if in spirit.

Liz's mom was full of love, joy, and talent galore! She was compassionate and passionate. She was spunky! She had a lovely eye for the details, in life and in her art. I remember how profoundly her talent touched me. She could do anything! I particularly remember a quilt she made for her first grandchild, Katie. She hand appliqued the top with a story-book-like theme and it was stunning (she also wrote a story to go along with it). I also remember thinking at the time: how did she do that? and: gosh, how I'd love to be able to do that, too!

Paul wrote in his e-mail that his mom loved me like a daughter. He was so kind to say those words . . .

I loved her so very much . . . more than she'll ever know!

This Week: Playing Catch-up . . . with RJR

I designed two wall hangings a couple of months ago with the new Susan Branch's "In Love With Nature" fabric by RJR that I will be making into patterns. I got my fabric and measurements out today so I can start cutting & sewing them together. They both have the same applique on the tops (falling leaves and a few bumble bees!) but the patterns themselves are slightly different. One is called: "Picnic In The Glade" and the other is called: "Summer In The Forest". PITG is made using stronger tones from the line and SITF is made using more muted tones. I hope to have them finished soon and they will be available as patterns on my website, hopefully within the next few weeks. I'll post pictures, too.

Next on the agenda was to finish a design using the newest RJR's Everything But The Kitchen Sink fabrics (due in quilt shops this month). I finished it yesterday and made some minor tweaks today. I ordered the fabric and will begin that project, soon. That's another one that began a few months ago but, due to several deadlines, it had to be delayed. The name of this new design is called: Butterscotch Candy and it uses an array of fabrics from this line. I'm excited to get started on it, as I know the fabrics are going to go together quite well and will look so much better in person (I used my EQ6 software to place the fabrics into my design). It is always a bit challenging to design on EQ6 with the 1930's prints because the tones are lighter and aren't very true-to-life. And although this new pattern will have some traditional blocks, I hope the encouragement of using many different fabrics will peak quilter's interests to try it!

There are more things to come with RJR, but for now I can cross a few more things off of my list . . . :)

A Visit To Snow Sculptures In Breckenridge, CO

Every January, Breckenridge, Colorado holds it's annual snow sculpting show. Countries from around the world are represented. They start out with the same sized block of packed snow . . .

. . . then come up with works of art, such as this hand holding a globe of the world. You can see a Greek statue of a woman and tumbled pillars in the background.

This is the back side of the previous photo (the nymph cannot be seen but is on the front right of the picture). You can see the back of yet another figure in this sculpture. There were carved flowers, as well.

This one had such great whimsical detail. See the man hiding in front of the bear's left paw while the bear is peering through the window of his camper?

Check out the beaver laughing on it's back in the foreground and the owl about to loose it's home.

This one was sculpted by a group from Mexico. Although simple in design, it was very beautiful.

So elegant from China . . .

The details were amazing . . .

Erv and I met the man who designed this one and he took First Place (Yukon/Canada). He allowed us behind the ropes to show us the details up close and explain how it all came together. The sculpture had a rather macabre feel to it and behind the totem was a figure that looked as if it were straight out of the middle ages. I'm reading the book, "World Without End" right now, so this one was really neat to see.

It always amazes me that we can zip up to the mountains to see the beauty there year round. We typically don't have snow when they'll have several feet of it. And when it is in the 90's here, they'll have lovely 70 degree days. A great place to escape to any time.

Nudges of Spring Market

Plans are forging ahead for Spring Market, 2009! I'm designing & making the last sample quilt in the series of "I Love Lucy" fabric by Quilting Treasures. The fabric line is called: "Hollywood At Last". I've also designed & will be making the quilt for their upcoming Norman Rockwell's "Christmas" line, as well. These quilts will be displayed in QT's booth in May.

In addition to the Block-of-the-Month I'm hosting through my website, I'm in the process of finishing the design for a BOM that will be distributed by Brewer (available to quilt shops everywhere). Quilts, Inc. has to put the final approval on it, but I've also been asked to do a "Schoolhouse" presentation promoting the Block-of-the-Month. I'm excited about it because the design is fresh and modern and I'm hoping to turn on some would-be appliquers into great lovers of this resurgent art form.

RJR is coming out with a new line called: Fifth Avenue. I'll be making a quilt from this fabric for Market, too.

I talked about it earlier but realize that I never came back in to chat about my 2009 Block-of-the-Month. The name of the quilt design is called: Take A Break. You can find out all of the information you'll need to join our BOM Club on our website, here.

The photo you see, above, is of our Teabag block, which is one of the January blocks you'll receive when you become a Block-of-the-Month Club Member. All blocks can be either hand- or machine-appliqued. I'm using Heather Bailey's Fresh Cut fabric line by Free Spirit.

Our Block-of-the-Month is only $2 per month and you'll receive fabric yardage requirements, templates for all of the blocks, as well as a monthly recipe that goes along with our theme of taking a break from the busyness of life. Lastly, if you sign up before the end of January, you'll be included for a drawing of a box of current fabrics. Not bad, huh.
